I'm really hoping the movie version of neo-Western "The Sisters Brothers" is a huge success. That will boost the production prospects of "Whiskey When We're Dry," an already-optioned neo-Western that's female centric.
You might not expect the mud and the blood and the booze running through the journey of adolescent Jesselin, disguising herself as a boy and riding west in search of her desperado brother. Jesse is a sharpshooter. Her brother's Wild Bunch is as much a religious cult as it is a gang.
Jesse goes full-on when she needs to, and there are elements of "Mad Max on the American frontier." Violence is casual, catastrophic and personal. Identity and gender are fluid. The action and the emotion swings from tight focus to sprawling panorama.
Five stars. Buy this book.
This is a beautifully written coming of age story of a young woman in the later 1800’s in the Southwest. Lovely prose and exciting plot line along with a rich sense of the characters make this a do-not-miss!!!
What a story! Not a Western fAn but the reviews enticed me to read this book . It was majestic and as big as the mountains itself. Do yourself a favor a nd read this book and escape into the American West.
This book knocked my socks off. The main character is new to fiction and made me ponder ethical choices I hadn't previously thought about.
It’s 1885 in rural America. Jessilynn Harney is orphaned at a young age, and is alone when her brother Noah runs away from home at age 16. Jessilynn hasn’t seen him in five and a half years, until she goes to town looking for a husband and the Sheriff tells her there’s a warrant out for Noah wanted dead or alive.

Having no other kin except an outlaw for a brother, Jessilynn takes matters into her own hands. She chops her hair, disguises herself in men’s clothing, takes her pa’s guns and rides off with her horse to find her brother.

The story tells of her journey to find Noah. She faces violence, death, thievery, and even love.

Whiskey When We’re Dry is True Grit meets Cormac McCarthy.

This novel was so beautifully written (I found myself reading aloud in my head with a Southern drawl - how corny is that?!). The Wild West seems to be something of a dying genre, and it felt right that this novel started my fall reading. I will recommend Whiskey When We’re Dry oh so many times over.
A lyrical adventure centered around a hero whose voice you won’t soon forget. The body count was high, but hey, there were gunslingers involved. The hard life of the opening West was solidly evoked, a believable chunk of probable history, and the characters felt real, with real feelings, real love, real heartbreak. I wasn’t crazy about an outlaw utopia just past the middle, but the book got past that regrounded itself commendably. Glad I travelled along with Jess, the toughest cowgirl or cowboy you’ll be lucky enough to meet.
This is an outstanding story. I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what would happen next to Jessilyn. From start to finish it felt like a story that could have really happened. I enjoyed reading this as much as the best books by Stephen Harrigan and even Cormac McCarthy.
