The Curtain A Novel Patrick Ord Dave King Ranilo Cabo 9780615780115 Books

While this is a decent read, there are a few things that future readers should know before beginning:

-this primarily a dialogue-driven book. Nearly all of the information is given while characters speak.

-this is an agenda-driven book. The author clearly takes issue with marketing schemes that are prevalent on the internet. He's done his homework and presents his research in the guise of a fiction book. This could have easily been a non-fiction thesis paper.

-the author believes in redemption and writes the ultimate redemption in this book. It's over the top and quite unrealistic, but some readers may enjoy it.

-if you think you know a lot about the internet and why certain ads pop up when you get on Facebook, you might only understand half of it. This book will teach you about internet behavior habits and try to persuade you to change your ways.

This is the author's first book. The writing flows together, though the dialogue does get quite wordy and lengthy. I give him props for keeping track of all of his details and using these details to his advantage in the climax of the book. While the agenda, spelled out very clearly in the first two chapters, is forced down the readers' throats, the fictional aspects of the story smooth things out as the book progresses.

Future readers may like to know that this is a clean book with no foul language, no extreme violence, and no sexual situations. It's also not overly religious. I did enjoy the quotes at the beginning of the chapters. A lot of research went into this book.

The Curtain A Novel Patrick Ord Dave King Ranilo Cabo 9780615780115 Books Reviews

Patrick Ord joins Upton Sinclair, Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Stephens, Robert Herrick, etc. as a "muckraker" of corporate misbehavior. I read all the nearly 300 reviews of this novel but the term Muckraker was absent from all. The Curtain is on par with the best muckraker efforts of a century ago. The meat packing industry 's horrific conditions and lack of ethics were exposed by Sinclair and Robert Herrick, respectively. Tarbell took on Standard Oil. Stephens linked big business and corrupt politicians. Ord exposes the pervasive amoral profit seeking by corporations using internet datamining and slick market parsing. I found the Curtain an easier read than the Jungle. The horror of how consumers are manipulated-- How self esteem has replaced self respect (One has to read the book for precise definitions) How self esteem has been sexualized by the media, how games are designed to be addictive and can be used a gateways to less benign then destructive behaviors, how we keep giving the dataminers fresh areas to prospect is graphically depicted int this books pages. It is a must read for everyone who loves their freedoms. This should be required reading of every child before getting a smart phone and/or access to the Information Highway.
The overwhelming majority of reviews were positive and most of them are looking forward to the author's next book. I have a modest recommendation- Expose how corporations have become so dominant politically and economically as the result of an iteration of Supreme Court decisions which have insidiously empowered corporations. This process-- as an unintended consequence (Robert Jordan Eye of the World) --I submit --has eroded both democracy and capitalism.
Specifically In 1886, SCOTUS began dismantling the safeguards against Corporate misbehavior which the framers of the Constitution and the various states had erected. Santa Clara vs Southern Pacific RR was the first step toward corporate personhood and Citizens United vs FEC the latest giving corporations the greenlight to spend unlimited funds on political agendas --first amendment, expression of free speech.
My browser could not find henrymaddox.com, but I did find reclaimdemocracy.org. look there for much better presentations of the potential for corporation sociopathy.
This is not the smoothest prose on the planet - the author definitely needs to hone his craft or hire an editor - BUT read the reviews at least, because you should know. I'm not closing any social media accounts and I do want those club discounts, but it is a decision I make with my eyes open. We all should.

We all know what we're doing, right? I'm here, you're here . . . we're sharing info on a number of sites . . . pictures, wish-lists . . . and we all read those user agreements of course. Don't we? I mean who signs a contract without reading it? I know I pour over the user agreements on everything, including updates to software on my devices - I make an appointment with my attorney before electronically signing - NOT!

We have profiles here, on Google, on Facebook. We have club cards for our favorite stores so we can get those bonus points and coupons. No biggie. Right?

At very least, read all the reviews here. The book would have been better as a non-fiction publication, but the author apparently felt he would reach a wider audience with a work of fiction. He certainly got my attention.
